The Motown Sound Collection: Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Temptations & The Undisputed Truth – verschijnt op 13 december 2024

Nu dit jaar ten einde loopt, biedt de doorlopende Motown Sound Collection vinyl heruitgaveserie van Elemental Music nog drie prestigieuze titels uit de archieven van het iconische label uit Detroit die op 13 december 2024 uitkomen: neither one of us van gladys knight & the pips, solid rock van the temptations en de titelloze van the undisputed truth. Met negentien titels die sinds mei zijn uitgerold, varieerden de onuitwisbare Motown-titels van het onvergetelijke I wish it would rain van the temptations, het onnavolgbare I hear a symphony van de supremes en het iconische When I'm alone i cry van marvin gaye. neither one of us (wilt degene zijn die vaarwel zegt) van gladys knight & the pips.


Gladys Knight & the Pips’ neither one of us Het negende studioalbum van Gladys Knight & the Pips, uitgebracht in 1973, was hun meest succesvolle album. Het klom in de Billboard Top LPs-hitlijst naar de #9-positie en bereikte pole position in de Top Soul LPs-hitlijst. De titeltrack van het album, die All Music Guide omschreef als “magnifiek met verbluffende vocalen van Gladys Knight”, bereikte de #1-positie in de Amerikaanse R&B-hitlijst en #2 in de Singles-hitlijst. Rolling Stone prees de “prominente strijkerssectie, een rush van achtergrondvocalen van de Pips, elektrische keyboards en pittige bas en Knight die een van de meest zanderige stemmen op de Motown-lijst had.” De opvolger “Daddy Could Swear, I Declare” bereikte #2 in de R&B-hitlijst en belandde in de Top 20 op #19. Solide rock van The Temptations Het 15e studioalbum van The Temptations, Solid Rock, stond bovenaan de R&B-albumlijst van Billboard op #1 toen het in 1972 werd uitgebracht. Het eerste album van de band zonder de oprichters Eddie Kendricks en Paul Williams, Solid Rock, soms drie singles. Oorspronkelijk een b-kant van de monumentale single van de band "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Needs Today)", "It's Summer" was net de helft van de Hot 100 en piek op #51. De tweede single van The Temptations "Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are)" werd een stuk beter en was een Top Tien-hit in de R&B-lijst en piekte op #18 in de Hot 100. "Take A Look Around " rondde de focustracks van het album af en leverde de band een Top 30-hit op. "Save My Love for a Rainy Day" van The Undisputed Truth


The Undisputed Truth’s The Undisputed TruthReleased in 1971 and produced by one of the undisputed creators of the classic Motown Sound Norman Whitfield, the self-titled debut of The Undisputed Truth launched the band’s career by combining the traditional Motown Sound with psychedelia-laced soul. “A beautiful transitional record” (BBC), the first single “Save My Love for a Rainy Day” (peaked at #43 on the R&B chart), it set the stage for their second and career-high hit single “Smiling Faces Sometimes” which posited itself at #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Speculated to be a testing ground by Whitfield, many of the tracks had also been recorded by labelmates The Temptations and even includes a “quiet, reflective take” on the song “Aquarius” (from the musical Hair).

While 2024’s slate of releases concludes with these three legendary albums, 2025 will see even more Motown Sound classics set for release including Reflections from Diana Ross & The Supremes, Pure Smokey by Smokey Robinson, and Changing Times by The Four Tops (full schedule below). These indelible Motown titles are part of a continuing series of long-playing vinyl reissues of crate digger favorites from the celebrated label’s unrivaled catalog. All releases will replicate the bold sound and 12-by-12 full-color packaging of the ‘60s and ‘70s LPs.
