Mr Marigold’s Attractions are celebrating 50 years of their music with their newest album Then and Now recorded at Black Bay Studio in Kirkibost, Great Bernera.
Reuniting again to release a new round of music, the band have come together to relive their tour days with a new album featuring their top hits and newest creations.
The band consist of brothers Don and Ken MacLennan, Arthur Scott, and Ray Turpie. They formed Mr Marigold’s Attraction in 1967 while they attended Aberdeen University. Now, the group have reunited at Black Bay Studio to bring together some of their tracks from 50 years ago along with three brand new releases.
During their university years, the band travelled across the northeast of Scotland in their brightly decorated van, playing their own songs to packed local crowds. They’ve since shared photos from their touring days on their Facebook page, along with posts about the bands who inspired them.
With 50 years between some tracks on the album, fans can listen to the past and current sound of Mr Marigold’s Attraction. Don, Arthur and Ray joined Ken on the Isle of Lewis to spend just one day recording new music, which Ken said it was as if “no time had passed”.
Ken MacLennan said: “One track was re-recorded at Black Bay, but the original material was recorded at Pam Audio in Edinburgh 50 years ago.”
After graduating from university, the group went their separate ways. Now based in Strathpeffer, Ross Shire, Lewis and one further afield in California, the band came back together to record a few new tracks in one day on Lewis after so long apart.
He said: “That in itself was a challenge because some of the guys have arthritis in their hands. They practiced a lot in the run up to it and, in the end, it came together really well.”
After missing 50 years of rehearsing together, their day at Black Bay Studio was the first time meeting up and playing together since parting ways.
They had musician Alasdair Caplin, who lives in Lochs, to feature on some of the tracks, along with a video created by Calum Blane to accompany their song A Postcard Once in a While, which was recorded in Edinburgh.
The album is set to be release on 22 December, bringing together the bands old and current sound. Reflecting on their past music and reminiscing to days on tour, Mr Marigold’s Attractions have returned to their roots to reintroduce themselves to past and potential new fans.
